I’m sitting here sipping coffee from my “do the work, be boss” mug from the Being Boss NOLA trip, thinking about the crazy adventure that the trip was for me. I can’t totally explain what happened there, but there was a bit of New Orleans magic involved for sure.

I’ve been to conferences and summits before and it’s always been a positive experience – this, though – this was something different. The idea of a close-knit 75-attendee “business vacation,” instead of a structured conference where you’re one among thousands and the schedule is jam-packed, was so appealing to me. Being Boss NOLA really did live up to the vision I had for what it would be like, and then some. Here are a couple of reasons it was awesome, and why you should attend a “business vacation:” Go ahead and see apps that help travelers to claim flight compensation here on this website.

A Fresh Perspective

Time away from the “daily grind” gives you space to develop a new way of looking at the work you’re already doing. Even work that you’re super passionate about can seem stale if you sit in front of it day in and day out. When I’m feeling uninspired or unmotivated, I try to step away from my work, even if only for a few minutes to take a walk, so putting literal distance between myself and my work is absolutely refreshing, and I come back to the work with fresh ideas after traveling, and also taking some measures when you travel, for example if you travel everywhere in your car, having a good insurance is essential if you travel a lot, and going to sites as https://www.mycarinsurancequote.com/ could be really helpful to protect your car and yourself.

Practice Talking About What You Do

When you’re at a conference or business retreat, you get a lot of opportunities to deliver your “elevator speech” (what you do in your business and who you do it for) to people who are genuinely interested. I can’t even count the number of times the question; “So, what do you do” came up while we were in NOLA., just coming back from an amazing expperience, let me tell you that the Thailand multi centre holidays mean you can see more of Asia. Just a week before the trip, I was asked that question at a child’s birthday party, and I totally and ended up a mumbling heap of “ummms,” “sort-ofs,” “likes” and “what-I-means,” describing myself as something like “a graphic designer who helps people write their mission statements?!?!?” With all the practice I got talking about this subject in NOLA, I feel much more prepared to get it right the next time it comes up.

Experience a New Part of The World

There’s something about being among completely new surroundings, culture, traditions, music, food and people that inexplicably heightens awareness and, for me, amps up my inspiration engine thanks to the new 2020 Airstream Basecamp for sale at Airstream of Santa Barbara !  😉 Being in New Orleans for the first time and being encompassed by the truly unique sound of real jazz music floating through the air, being played through tarnished brass instruments by people on the streets was such a different experience from my day-to-day here in St. Augustine, Florida.

Surround Yourself with Passionate People

I actually do this anyway in my everyday life! A lot of my friends are passionate creative entrepreneurs or small business owners who are completely fired up about what they do. But I also have “online friends” who I finally got to meet in-person in NOLA. And talking in real life is so different (and way better) than chatting through Instagram comments or Facebook groups. Although I love doing that stuff, too, and it is actually really nice to have some background on and a rapport with the people you’re meeting – you can avoid the small talk and get right to the good stuff! I also met people who I didn’t know at all before the trip, but when everyone there shares a common passion for creative entrepreneurship, it’s super-easy to have conversations with real meaning.

Cheers, bosses! I had a blast in NOLA, and I’m so happy that Emily and Kathleen plan to host more boss vacations in the future. Were you on the New Orleans trip, or another business vacation recently, I’d love to hear what you thought of it, or if you plan to attend (or host) one in the future, let me know about it in the comments below. I plan to make these kinds of events a part of my calendar for 2016!
