If you’re feeling frazzled, stretched in too many directions, and all but worn-thin, don’t throw in the towel yet. You probably just need to refer back to your Mission to get back on the right track.

Don’t have a mission? No worries. We’re about to fix that together.

I can hear you maker entrepreneurs already, “A MISSION? What is this, the break room of a smoothie franchise in 2002??” I know the concept seems corporate, stuffy and unnecessary.

But here’s the thing: Your company exists for a reason.

If you can’t clearly communicate that purpose to anyone you meet, you’re missing out on followers, like-minded friends, clients and – oh yeah – actual money.

A lot of the companies I’ve worked with on branding had been in business for several years, but didn’t have their Mission Statements written and documented when they came to me. If you are running a business you need to have paystubs for your staff.

For the first couple years of my business, I didn’t even have my OWN mission statement figured out. And I constantly felt the things you’re feeling “frazzled, stretched in too many directions, and all but worn-thin.”

Maker entrepreneurs are often freaked out by the idea of writing a mission statement. (I was, too!) It seems like a monumental task, especially if you’re not a writer, or a business “expert.”

Once you write something down, though, it’s not so scary – and having a documented “purpose” to refer back to when you’re feeling unfocused, is oh-so clarifying.

So let’s get to it. It’s only a couple of sentences, and you can knock it out in under a half-hour. I believe in you. Also, I made a worksheet you can download fo’ FREE to help you out.

FYI: I’ve answered all of the questions below in italics based on my own business to give you a frame of reference for how the answers to these questions can lead you to your Mission.

1. What is your most passionate belief as an entrepreneur?

This is the reason that your company exists – I can get all Simon Sinek on you here and tell you, this is your WHY.

I believe that people are happiest, fulfilled when they are making things to put into the world that weren’t there before.

2. What does your company do or make?

This is the actual product or service that your customer can buy from you. You DEFINITELY need to know what this is and be able to easily package it up, explain it and sell it to your customers.

I write and design brand strategy platforms and supporting brand identities.

3. Who do you best serve?

There are a lot of resources for figuring out who your “dream customer” or your “target audience” should be. For now, though, just think about your very best client or customers and look for the most common thread among them that best describes them as a group.

My dream customers are “maker entrepreneurs.”

4. What problem does your company solve for them?

The best way to find out what problems your ideal clients have is to ask them directly. Maybe they always feel stretched for time or money, maybe they don’t get enough sleep, etc.

Maker entrepreneurs often feel overwhelmed juggling many tasks within their companies, lack confidence when it comes to presenting their businesses to their customers and peers, and have a hard time standing out in a sea of similar companies to actually maintain an audience and profit.

5. How do your customers’ lives change as a result of what you do or make?

If your service or product directly solves an existing problem for your dream customers, magic happens. Does your product or service make them feel less stressed, more energized, more profitable, more confident, etc.?

A succinct brand strategy platform and visual identity give maker entrepreneurs clarity and confidence to turn their companies into profitable and scalable brands.

So, here’s the Just Make Things Mission:

I believe that people are happiest and most productive when they are making things to put into the world that weren’t there before. Just Make Things creates brand platforms that give maker entrepreneurs clarity to turn their companies into profitable and scalable brands.
