As I scan my social feeds to check out what some of my new friends from The Maker’s Summit are saying about the conference, there’s a common thread: awesome + overwhelm.

The two days of The Maker’s Summit were jam-packed with great information, amazing experiences and new connections. And man, did I feel like I was surrounded by “my people!” When you go to such a rad conference, you show up completely stoked and that feeling only escalates as the event goes on. Before each speaker, peer group and workshop, I looked over to my friends with a big, goofy grin plastered across my face and said “guys, I’m so excited!” bouncing a little bit in my chair. I just couldn’t wait for the flood of information and good vibes that were about to fill my brain.

The energy of being around lots of people, interacting and sharing experiences, especially when the group is full of like-minds and kindred spirits, is completely intoxicating. And even after you return, sit at your desk and try to get back to work, that “conference buzz” won’t go away.

You just know your dream business is right around the corner–if you could just remember and apply all the awesome tips you learned at the conference. So you refresh your instagram feed and search the conference hashtag until the buzz wears off and the overwhelm and exhaustion of the not-as-tingly and a-little-more-pukey “conference hangover” sets in.

I think the “conference buzz” is a really normal feeling, and a great one if you embrace it and try not to let it turn into overwhelm. Here are a few things I’m doing to “reel it in:”

1. Get Some Rest
Conference weekends are super exciting, but can be VERY draining (especially for introverts like me). If you took good notes, don’t worry about diving right in and trying to apply everything you learned right off the bat. Give your mind and your body some time to relax, get some sleep and just let all that new knowledge sink in for a couple of days.

2. Check Your Notes + Make a List
Once you’ve had a little time away from the information overload, open up your notebook from the conference and review what you wrote for each speaker session, workshop and peer group. Try grabbing a separate piece of paper and write a list of key points from each section that you really want to reflect on or dive into more deeply later.

3. Separate and Schedule Actionable Items
When you have your list created, go back through and highlight any items that you’d like to apply to your own business moving forward. Add some quick side notes and then put dates next to the items so you can prioritize which pieces are “now” things that are easily implemented immediately, and which items might be better moved to a back burner, scheduled for next quarter or broken down further into more digestible pieces.

4. Connect with Your New Friends
You surely collected a freaking-ton of business cards while you mingled at the conference and after parties. I met so many awesome folks last weekend that I’d love to keep in touch with. I added/followed/connected with a lot of them on social networks while we were at the conference, but it’s nice to go back and personally email or message the people you felt a strong connection with or that you most feel you can learn from.

NowThings

Most of all, don’t sweat it too much! It’s fine to think about what you might do differently next time, but remember that just attending a great conference benefits you more than you might know. Getting out into the world and “showing up” at events where people like you and your dream clients or your peers gather is a great thing for your business.

Were you at The Maker’s Summit? If we didn’t meet, I’d love to get in touch. I definitely have the conference bug now. Are you planning to go to any other conferences or events that I might like? Please share below in the comments!
